Them Crooked Vultures are a power trio supergroup of John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), David Grohl (Nirvana and Foo Fighters) and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age). What I can make of it, this is a mix of all 3 members strengths. Track by track there are songs that sound psychedelic and other that are really riff oriented and most all of them kick ass and take names... All in all, it really rocks. There are a few surprises in here... or at least there were for me. I expected a heavy influence of blues and there's only a little. Scumbag Blues has a fun keyboard/organ funk and I swear it is a Cream cover. The track Elephants sounds like it was a b-side of a Zeppelin album. Which it is great by the way. Anther surprise is the track Gunman which just grooves.
Really the rhythm section is as good as any. With Hommes grooving and singing up front, it totally works. I had no idea what to expect when I bought this. Similar to when I bought The Dead Weather album. They could go in all kinds of directions but I think they stuck to what they know and did a little branching in each song. Which I am sure they will get criticized for. I like what I hear on this record. Sadly, it is a supergroup and I don't expect another album by then... and maybe 1 more trip through Chicago. Go pick this up if you like some good hard rock and roll.
Here's a teaser of their stuff.
