1. Arcade Fire - Suburbs
This one is a slam dunk. Every song is fantastic IMO. Amazingly this had so much hype and totally lived up to it... If you haven't listened to the album, get it today you won't be disappointed.

2. The Black Keys - Brothers
This is the album that catapulted them to stardom. It's an easy pick since I am a huge Black Keys fan. I was worried about this one though. Dan had done a solo gig and then a rap collaboration (Blakrok). So I thought his focus may have been shifted, but I was proven wrong. This might not be my favorite album by them but it really shows how they've grown.

3. Yeasayer - Odd Blood
This one took me by surprise. What a mix of experimental rock. I feel like the coolest person when I listen to this album... Don't ask me why because I don't know.

4. The Black Angels - Phosphene Dream
A late addition to my collection. This album is so retro psychedelia, I have been waiting for this sound since I started listening to Velvet Underground and Jefferson Airplane. I admit, it's a love'em or hate'em band. And I love'em.

5. LCD Soundsystem - This is Happening
Murphy knocked it out of the park on this one. Fantastic tour to go along with this album... Sadly this is likely the last one they do... :(

6. The New Pornographers - Together
Canada's finest indie power pop group. Another spectacular effort here. Rivals Twin Cinema.

7. The Roots - How I Got Over
This one might surprise most of you. Great record here... nothing flashy, just good soul/R&B/hip hop.... The Roots are really a great group, just check them out.

8. Superchunk - Majesty Shredding
The return of Superchunk! I love the title of this album and the tracks just keep on rocking throughout. You don't get a breather, you don't get anything but rock and roll here.

9. The Dead Weather - Sea of Cowards
Speaking of rock and roll. This is so raw... Even better than Horehound. This album will infect you if you allow it to.

10. Minus The Bear - OMNI
This one caught me by surprise. Earlier albums didn't keep my attention like this one did.

11. Apples in Stereo - Travelers of Space and Time
Another solid effort by the Apples in Stereo. The birthplace of the best song of 2010 - Dance Floor. Call me what you want, I LOVE that song.

12. Mark Ronson and the Business International - Record Collection
Super producer Mark Ronson just kicks out the grooves here.

13. Girl Talk - All Day
Here's one that has the potential to get old. But I keep listening and it keeps my butt moving and head bobbing... Sounds weird I know... but this mashup is killer.

14. Ben Rector - Into the Morning
Very popular (the mix FM) sounding... I admit it... but it is a good listen.

15. Hot Chip - One Life Stand
A little lighter than the usual Hot Chip album. Great grooves and even some fun lyrics.

16. Spoon - Transference
Maturity of Spoon. Nuff said.

17. Wolf Parade - Expo 86
Easily their best effort to date... then they go on hiatus... Hate it when that happens.

18. Daft Punk - Tron Legacy Soundtrack
What? A soundtrack? Yeah, by itself it's OK. But put it to a movie (go see Tron Legacy) and it is apparent how awesome it is. Fits Tron perfectly.

It is with a heavy heart I write this blog. You have been on the very top of my best concert ever list for the past 5949 days. For those of you who care, that would take us back to July 12th, 1994. The night when the Division Bell tour arrived at Soldier Field in Chicago. Little did I know the impact this night would have on me. I remember the night like it was yesterday.
Anyways, I am hear to tell you that you've been knocked down to #2 on the list. The show I saw last night which featured Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem has replaced you at #1 concert ever. I've given this a lot of thought and tried to come up with reasons not put it above you, but I can't do it. No one is ever on top forever.
There are many reasons why I feel it is fitting that this show is very suitable as a replacement.

1. From top to bottom both with Hot Chip and LCD, best set list ever
2. Never have I experienced such raw energy and fun loving crowd
3. The theatrics were just amazing and knowing James Murphy who puts a lot of Pink Floyd innuendo in his lyrics, the theatrics were a subtle tribute to Pink Floyd IMO
4. Where I am in my life, middle aged and enjoying and participating in this show, I think I needed it
5. It took a cutting edge English band to complement a cutting edge American band to dethrone you
6. I can only imagine this is similar to what the UFO days were like in the 60s
7. There was a lot of drug use at this show
8. This is likely the last time I'll see LCD Soundsystem since Murphy plans to retire the band after this tour (similar to the state Pink Floyd has become)
9. I had very high expectations for this concert (something I never do) and it exceeded them

So I thank you for being so hard to dethrone for 16yrs, 3 months and 13 days. Now Pitchshifter and I differ on our top concert ever.

So I saw Devo at a Lollapalooza aftershow... interesting setup actually. 2.5hrs worth of DJ sets (good) and then Dirty Projectors (terrible) and then finally Devo comes out. They sounded really good but their choreography seemed a little contrived. There you have a bunch of over the hill and weight guys trying to relive their youth. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the show. The music, lighting and theatrics were really good. Check them out if they come to your town. Here's "What We Do".

LALA.com is shutting down at midnight tonight. Lala was a cloud based music service that allowed users to listen a song all the way through once, allowed users to buy access to a song for a really low price and even sold the mp3s. Apple purchased lala earlier this year and rumors are they are releasing an itunes.com site similar to lala.com as soon as next week. Lala, you will be missed. you really helped me broaden my music horizon. I wait with great anticipation to what itunes next move is. But for now, we have to live with tube sites.

Spoon – Transference album review

I’ve had this album since it was released and haven’t had a chance to review it until now. I had heard some initial buzz about them going back to their roots on this record. And hearing the Got Nuffin EP, I thought this was going to be the next “Girls Can Tell”. GCT is my favorite album by them and I just love how they have grown since then. In short, I think I set myself up for disappointment unless Transference was going to be my favorite all time album.

So Transference starts out pretty slow in my opinion. The first few songs don’t do a whole lot for me. They are average by Spoon’s standards. Then Written in Reverse hits or more like clanks you in the head. A funky groove with the piano front and center is great. Britt’s vocals are really good and so are the backing vocals. I Saw The Light follows it which is a perfect song and signature Spoon as well as Trouble Comes Running. Goodnight Laura and Out Go The Lights are well written songs which make me want to hear them in a small intimate setting. Closing out the record are Got Nuffin which most of us have already heard and my favorite Nobody Gets Me But You. The bass line, lyrics, groove and asynchronous piano effects are perfect.

With Transference, I was hoping for Sgt Peppers and got Abbey Road. Or for Stones fans I was hoping for Exile and got Tattoo You. Solid effort by Spoon but not as good as GaGaGaGaGa, Kill The Moonlight or Gimme Fiction

BRMC Beat the Devil's Tatoo album review

The latest album by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is an interesting step in a new direction for them. The first track, Beat The Devil’s Tattoo is a dark sounding song with a marching beat to it. It’s almost haunting to an extent, what a great opening track. Following that up is Conscience Killer which starts out just as haunting. Then gets into high gear and really rocks out. At first listen, I thought this was a concept album. And I liked the new sound. But quickly I realized it wasn’t a concept album and that new sound wasn’t going to last throughout the record. As we make it deeper into the album the sound changes. You get some decent ballads and plain rock songs that you would expect from BRMC. With the same fuzzy sound you’ve heard off of Howl and BRMC. River Styx sticks out to me as their new sound. So they dipped their toe in something new but didn’t follow through on the entire album. I am not sure why, it could be just they weren’t willing to make that commitment or maybe they just aren’t adept to writing 12 songs in that format. I really like the new direction. I really like BRMC and I like to see bands grow. I think this is a small step in that direction. Let’s hope the next step resembles a moon walk in their new direction.

Pitchshifter has seen Cheap Trick a Guinness book record of 47 times. I like their music and they are easily the best thing out of Rockford, IL. Even better than Ginger Lynn Allen. But 47 times and a Bun E. Carlos signed cymbal for $500? Pitchshifter has issues with Cheap Trick. Enjoy.
